That’s the great thing about pursuing your passions—it leads you to people who feel as strongly about the things you love

Taken from Pam Pastor's article I read this morning about her obssession with nail polish which lead her to forge friendships with people from other countries who are just as obssessed with nail polish as she is.

Anyway, I was just struck with the quote because I can, on so many occassions, prove the veracity of that "phenomenon"...striking friendships with people you probably wouldn't have been acquainted with in your normal school, work or neighborhood life. Just last weekend, roaming Cebu with my UMKTG friends as sticking-out-like-a-sore-thumbs tourists, we were accosted with normal, curious questions from fellow tourists and locals alike asking if we were schoolmates/officemates/neighborhood friends on a trip. When we try to answer, giving out varying schools/places of origins/line of work/ages, it seems that we are at a loss on how to explain why the heck we were friends...and I mean, good enough friends to actually travel to another province together when in actuality, the centripetal force behind this friendship is very easy to explain...the answer is made up of merely 4 letters (which may start with either k or j or c and ends with "pop"). But then again, how do you explain that to normal outsiders? Its weird how we can trace the "birth" of this friendship (a certain multiply post about Hanazawa Micky back in 2007) which holds true to my Lupiao friends as well (6am, day after Christmas, Ultra), but find it difficult to substantiate in terms that people outside of this circle can grasp. But then again, I guess that's precisely what makes these friendships so unique and special.

To this day, I can say that it has evolved into a more mainstream type of friendship, prone to the pitfalls of tampuhans, pikunans and misunderstandings, which to a certain extent, I am still grateful for as it "normalizes" the whole thing.I guess, even for my friends that I've met under more normal circumstances like school or work or even cousins, "pursuing" common passions actually serve to make these relationships funner and more interesting.

So hail to all these weirdness and obsessions, and hail to all those people who understand, tolerate and share this craziness! :D
